Euthanasia (from the Greek εὐθανασία meaning "good death": εὖ, eu (well or good) + θάνατος, thanatos (death)) refers to the practice of ending a life in a manner which relieves pain and suffering. According to the House of Lords Select Committee on Medical Ethics, the precise definition of euthanasia is "a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, to relieve intractable suffering."

The judicial sense of the term "homicide" includes any intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life, even to relieve intractable suffering. Thus judicially, a "mercy killing" or euthanasia is generally considered to be a criminal homicide and is normally used as a synonym of homicide committed at a request made by the patient

The controversy surrounding euthanasia centers around a two-pronged argument by opponents which characterises euthanasia as either voluntary "suicides", or as involuntary murders. (Hence, opponents argue that a broad policy of "euthanasia" is tantamount to eugenics). Much hinges on whether a particular death was considered an "easy," "painless," or "happy" one, or whether it was a "wrongful death". Proponents typically consider a death that increased suffering to be "wrongful," while opponents typically consider any deliberate death as "wrongful." "Euthanasia's" original meaning introduced the idea of a "rightful death" beyond that only found in natural deaths.

Euthanasia is the most active area of research in contemporary bioethics.

What is the difference between Involuntary and Un-volantary Euthanasia?
Q. I believe on is done without dieing person being told, and the other is when someone makes the decision on behalf of the person if they are unable to make the decision themselves - i.e. mentally ill. I ask because we have to do a project on Euthanasia for school. Thanks alot

A. Involuntary and "unvolantary", which is not a word, would mean the same thing. It should be involuntary and voluntary. The first is without the person's choice, the second is chosen by the person themselves.

Q. How do you feel about euthanasia and assisted suicide? Please help me out. Thanks

A. I believe that death comes naturally. I believe that with the help of another...that makes it UN-Natural. I Know that we have enough pain meds that will help relieve the pain or sting of death, so we shouldn't meddle in the science of death. Only my opinion !

  • Many advocates for a "right to die" would also like to see such opportunities expanded to include fully-competent patients with locked-in syndromes, quadriplegias, and other forms of extreme disability, specifically in cases where these victims express an ongoing and rational desire to die, but are physically incapable of ending their own lives. To deny such patients assistance is, to my own thinking, a form of torture by inaction.
