New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean comprising two main landmasses (the North Island and the South Island), and numerous smaller islands, most notably Stewart Island/Rakiura and the Chatham Islands. The indigenous Māori language name for New Zealand is Aotearoa, commonly translated as The Land of the Long White Cloud. The Realm of New Zealand also includes the Cook Islands and Niue (self-governing but in free association); Tokelau; and the Ross Dependency (New Zealand's territorial claim in Antarctica).

New Zealand is notable for its geographic isolation: it is situated about 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, and its closest neighbours to the north are New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. During its long isolation New Zealand developed a distinctive fauna dominated by birds, a number of which became extinct after the arrival of humans and the mammals they introduced.

The majority of New Zealand's population is of European descent; the indigenous Māori are the largest minority. Asians and non-Māori Polynesians are also significant minority groups, especially in urban areas. The most commonly spoken language is English.

New Zealand is a developed country that ranks highly in international comparisons on many topics, including education, economic freedom, and lack of corruption. Its cities also consistently rank among the world's most liveable.

Elizabeth II, as the Queen of New Zealand, is the country's head of state and is represented by a Governor-General, and executive political power is exercised by the Cabinet of New Zealand.

what is the best way to see New Zealand?
Q. We are planning to visit New Zealand and maybe Australia next year. Can anyone suggest a good escorted tour for us that is reasonable in price and about two weeks in length? Are the people in New Zealand friendly? Thanks for any help!

A. As I'm a New Zealander I have no idea what the best tours are as obviously us locals don't take them but a cheap bus company is the Kiwi Experience. I think they have guided tours. It's mostly full of backpackers & young people though, not sure how old you are. The best travel guide books are the Lonely Planet ones so check that out & also their website has a forum on it for asking other travellers advice on how they toured NZ (as in people who've just been here will answer you). Train in NZ is super slow, if you only have 2 weeks you might want to debate doing the Auckland to Wellington one as it takes about 12 hours!! Scenery is great for most of it but it is torture to be on a train for that long. Going from Auckland to National Park… [cont.]

Will a New Zealand restricted driver licence work in england?
Q. If I get a restricted drivers licence in New Zealand and move to the U.K will I be able to drive on the roads or will I need to take all the provisional tests again? And if you don't know the answer please dont guess because it is quite important. The rules from what I have seen are very similar, and we were colonised by the brits, we drive on the left too...

A. Hi. The UK authorities only recognise a full licence from 'designated countries' such as New Zealand. Unfortunately, you will be eligible to apply only for a provisional licence with all the restrictions that entails. You don't say how old you are - but please remember that the starting age for driving a car in the UK is 17.
