What do women wear to a funeral service?
Q. On Wednesday I'll be attending a funeral service and have never been to one before, just wondering what the appropriate attire is? Dress, skirt, pants, blazer? Thank you!

A. Any of the above would be fine, so long as it's conservative and in muted colors. Translation - don't wear something you'd see at a club or on a streetwalker.

What are some funny jokes/stories to tell at a funeral service ?
Q. I need funny jokes or stories to tell at a funeral service tonight, just to lighten up the mood of the folks. Any rude comments, please , don't post anything.
Asked by xxdark_angel95xx - Tue Feb 2 17:00:00 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I would suggest making a referrence to something the deceased found funny and something that most people there will quickly recognize as his sense of humour. If you go with a regular ice-breaker joke it could be seen as very tacky, or even inappropriate.

If I go to the viewing of a funeral is it necessary to go to the funeral service?
Q. I went to highschool with the deceased. I ordered flowers to be delivered to the funeral home and i will be staying at the viewing for no more than 20 mins to pay respects to the family. Is it necessary to go to the funeral service the next day?

A. Typically for aquaintences, you go to either service, most typically just the calling hours. It was very nice of you to send flowers as well. I only go to both if I was especially close to the person or felt compelled to be there for my family. I am sorry for your loss.

Is the Eddie Guerrero funeral service really on the WrestleMania 22 DVD? If so, where the heck is it?

Is it proper to video tape a funeral service for hospitalized persons, and soldiers overseas?
Q. I feel that this is highly unconventional and wish that the circumstances were otherwise. However my mother's brother has passed and she is hospitalized and can not travel. In addition to that there are several other family members who are stationed over seas and will not be able to attend the funeral as well. Would it be alright to ask his wife if the funeral can be taped? I don't want to come off as insensitive. However my mother and her brother of 70 were very close and she's overwhelmed that she can not travel.

A. My father passed away 8 months ago and I decided on my own to both videotape parts of the service and take pictures throughout the service. I am so glad I did it! I can finally sit and watch the video and pictures and take time to really see what the service was like. It is also a special way for me to spend quiet private time with my father, although he is gone. I can assure you that you will get a mixture of answers here, but I can only tell you to do what is right for you... who cares what others think! I am glad I did it~

A. Visit some Undertakers. You would be surprised at how different they are - find the one which you feel deals with you the best. They will then have options of where you would like the remains cremated/buried. The price may dictate whether you have a choice of day or time for the funeral and what type of coffin and whether you want cars for the mourners or not. For the service (I know my local crematorium has 20 minute slots), you can chose someone to take the service, or they may have a list of local church people or contacts for a non-religious person to take the service. You can then talk to the person concerned about eulogies, who you want to speak, music to be played or hymns to be sung. So really, your first port of call would be… [cont.]

A. If you go to www.mortuaryschools.com, it has a listing of every mortuary school in the US. You could try calling your local funeral homes to see if the might take you on as an assistant. Also, you may want to call your state board that licenses funeral directors to find out your state's requirements to become licensed. Sitting down with a funeral director would be beneficial as well so they could talk to you about the business and answer any questions you might have. Good luck and take care!!

A. First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm thinking that under the circumstances, something patriotic would be just as or more appropriate than something black, if that better suits her taste or your sentiments. If not that, then a simple black dress or skirt (or even a muted print with dark colors) would be appropriate with a dark sweater or jacket. I'm sure trousers or slacks would be fine, too if it will be outside. I think I saw pea coats on sale at an Old Navy flyer--if it will be that cold, that might make a nice versatile outer layer with whatever you pick. Q. I confronted a cousin about a innapropriate comment made the previous day of the service for the death of my grandpa. We don't talk and i had no way of getting ahold of her after the service. A. If someone behaves badly at a funeral service, it is not wise to do the same thing and confront them right there. Wait for a more appropiate time and place. We need to remember that a funeral is a highly emotional time for people and sometimes they do not react to the situation in what is considered a normal way. Your grandmother was probably angry with you because you actually stooped to this other persons level and did the same thing they did. Sometimes we have to put our personal feelings aside temporarily for the sake of others. Your grandmother just lost her husband and did not have time for petty quarrels in her family. It is obvious she expected more from you. The cousin was in fault for bad behavour, but so were you. Next time… [cont.]

do you have to pay the minister for a funeral service?
Q. My mother's funeral is today and I've asked my cousin to deliver the eulogy. He studied to be a minister, but doesn't actually practice it, but he fancies himself as one. I wanted to know if I'm obligated to pay him for the service anf if so, what would be the proper amount?

A. Where I live you pay the minister a standard fee for each service he provides (like for baptism, marriage, funeral, commemoration...). All this money goes for maintaining the church, for the needy, building other churches/monasteries, for the minister's salary and so on... Maybe it does not apply to where you live (or in your religion) because here one must be a real minister (accepted by the Church, not just someone who studies theology) to do such things or he might end up in jail! Still, in your particular situation, I guess that since he's family no money would be necessary.

Is there a name for the receiving line at a funeral service?
Q. Is there a name for the receiving line at a funeral service? Or is it just called a receiving line? Because when I hear "receiving line" I automatically think wedding... I don't know if it's just in the our culture (we're Irish Catholic), but at all of our family funeral services at the funeral home, the close family to the deceased stands up at the casket.

A. I agree with the other answer, the name "receiving line" reminds most people of weddings.. The custom in my Church or friends is the immediate family members, usually sit or stand together, and as you pass the casket viewing, pay respects to the deceased,(head bowed or prayer)... then the eldest family member, on down to the youngest. Thank you I feel sure each religion or family perhaps has different ways of paying respects and condolence's...thank you again.
