From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A ritual is a set of actions, performed mainly for their symbolic value, which is prescribed by a religion or by the traditions of a community. The term usually excludes actions which are arbitrarily chosen by the performers, or dictated purely by logic, chance, necessity, etc. A ritual may be performed on specific occasions, or at the discretion of individuals or communities. It may be performed by a single individual, by a group, or by the entire community; in arbitrary places, or in places especially reserved for it; either in public, in private, or before specific people. A ritual may be restricted to a certain subset of the community, and may enable or underscore the passage between religious or social states. The purposes of rituals are varied; with religious obligations or ideals, satisfaction of spiritual or emotional needs of the practitioners, strengthening of social bonds, social and moral education, demonstration of respect or submission, stating one's affiliation, obtaining social acceptance or approval for some event — or, sometimes, just for the pleasure of the ritual itself. Rituals of various kinds are a feature of almost all known human societies, past or present. They include not only the various worship rites and sacraments of organized religions and cults, but also the rites of passage of certain societies, atonement and purification rites, oaths of allegiance, dedication ceremonies, coronations and presidential inaugurations, marriages and funerals, school "rush" traditions and graduations, club meetings, sports events, Halloween parties, veteran parades, Christmas shopping and more. Many activities that are ostensibly performed for concrete purposes, such as jury trials, execution of criminals, and scientific symposia, are loaded with purely symbolic actions prescribed by regulations or tradition, and thus partly ritualistic in nature. Even common actions like hand-shaking and saying hello are rituals. In psychology, the term ritual is used in a technical sense for a repetitive behavior systematically used by a person to neutralize or prevent anxiety; it is a symptom of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Q. It has come to my attention that my sorority does not have a ritual book. We are in the process of making one with the few rituals that we have. I am looking for ideas. I am not asking for your rituals exactly, i know they are secrets, just ideas. As well as ideas for rituals and I want to know how your books are laid out (all text, scrapbook style ETC.) thanks and I will pick best answer Asked by Alisha B - Tue Nov 24 21:30:39 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. It was laid out like a cookbook. A list of all the materials you need, followed by step by step instructions on what to do. All the music and individual speaking parts where printed out on separate sheets, enough copies for all the speakers. These papers only came out during the ritual and went back into the binder right away. Any of the words or phrases that aren't written down were represented by blank spaces with underlining for each word. All text, no pictures, the logic being that if you dropped the book and it landed open images are too easy to see, it's not like anyone would be able to see the text. Answered by Splendid Irony - Wed Nov 25 09:48:40 2009 What kind of ritual uses writing on a naked human body, candles and chanting? Q. I was forced to participate in such a ritual and I'm wondering what it may of been for. It was very scary since I didn't know what was happening. But an image of an angry old woman suddenly came into my mind. I was so scared I screamed really loudly. The men writing on me held me down though and I wanted out of that room since I was uncomfortable and very scared. Please help me out since I am nervous that it may occur again. Not only is this physical, sexual, and psychological abuse by whomever forced it upon you, but it is also dabbling with the occult as well. First, you need to report whomever did this to the local authorities. They sound like some sort of mind control cult, and need to be brought to justice. Secondly, you need to get professional help ASAP!!! See a good bible-believing minister, who is not manipulative, and doesn't misuse his authority for personal gain, just as Paul prophesied many would do in the last days (2 Timothy 3) My prayers will be with you. Q. I have just acquired the ritual of summoning ability. How do you use it? Once you start the process and two other members are there, what do you do to summon another party member? Asked by Teddy - Sat Jun 6 00:35:48 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm pretty sure the tooltip on the spell tells you all you need to know. But in case it doesn't, here is what the Ritual of Summoning is: You create a portal through which you may summon a party or raid member. Two other party/raid members must then click on the portal to 'assist' you with the ritual. When two other party/raid members have assisted you, the ritual is complete and your summoned member has two minutes to accept the summon and join you.
