What kind of occupational complaints do service workers have?
Q. Would unionizations be able to help resolve some of those complaints? Is ther any reason why a new collar worker would not want the same benefits that blue collar workers were able to get by unionizing? What might be some of the reasons why a new collar worker would be hesitant to join union? What do you feel are the future prospects of unions in the service industry? Why?

How long to set up a new workers comp and disibility policy?
Q. I just started a business and I need to have workers comp and disibility policies set up. I have been in business but I was the lone employee...Now I am hiring people and I forgot to pick up the workers comp policy. If I contact my insurance today, how long would it take for it to be fully processed so I could have the certificate of worker's compensation?
Asked by trackman716d - Thu May 14 09:37:41 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The workers comp should happen within 2-3 days, assuming it's a basic (not tricky) risk - no USL&H exposure, etc. Disability will take a bit longer - maybe a few weeks, if there aren't any questions. your agent should be able to give you a good estimate on how long it would take!

Are hospice workers paid or purely volunteers getting tax breaks for service hours?
Q. It has to cost these workers money for gas and expenses and it has to cost for equipment and their hours of service. Just wondering how it all works?
Asked by skahhh - Wed Feb 6 20:34:38 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hospice uses a mix of volunteers and paid staff. Both groups are usually reimbursed by the hospice organization for gas and expenses; if not, then they can claim some of that off their taxes, but only if they itemize their tax return (rather than using the EZ form). Some hospices are nonprofit, but there are some that are for-profit. Here's a lot more details: In my own experience: hospice is wonderful. It's brought so much comfort and help to so many, including members of my own family.

What do renaissance workers do during the week?
Q. I recently went to the renaissance faire for the first time, and these people working at the booths that sell things were telling me about how they just travel from faire to faire and only work during the weekends. They live in tents on the faire grounds with other staff people. So question... I am just curious what do these workers do during the week?

A. Well I personally do psychic work on the side. Or sometimes I consult troubled werewolf's and vampires and help them work through their problems. Just because they are technically not human doesn't mean that they don't have issues too. Also I like to take a stab about helping people with their ghost problems. I'm basically like the ghost busters...but its just me...yeah. So thats what I do, and most people I talk to have similar responses.

Do any skilled workers want to work in Australia?
Q. I work assisting small businesses in Australia. Because of the booming economy, the biggest problem they face is finding skilled workers. From what I understand, the economy in the US is heading downhill, especially in construction. An International recruitment and immigration company I work with is considering opening a US office. It would offer free flights and relocation assistance, free immigration service to qualified employees, and a guaranteed well-paid job. Where would be the best location? We are considering either Southern California or Florida. Are these good locations? Thanks for your help. Any positive suggestions will be well much appreciated.

How much should we pay the workers?
Q. This is a question for my Dad. We hired 2 workers to repave our driveway, & they worked for about 6 hours, about 2 hours were to buy tools, lunch, etc. They were not from a company that fixed driveways, they were just 2 factory workers from my Dad's company who insisted on doing it for us. How much should we pay them? & should it be an amount of money for the both of them to split? Or, should we pay them individually? Please, only answers from people that know what they're talking about.

How many days of workers comp is my employer obligated to in Mass?
Q. A friend at work was injured on the job through no fault of his own. He had to stay home and rest and recieved no workers comp. Is this legal?
Asked by danandhil4ever - Wed Aug 5 06:12:03 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well work comp can't pay the claimant unless they are notified by either the company they insure or your friends doctor files it on his behalf. Your friend should have notified the company of an injury as soon as it happened. If he didn't do that than technically he's doing himself a dis-service by not filing. Each day that goes by, your friends credibility goes out the window because it's late filing. If he's sought treatment than his doctor should be able to file the claim on his behalf. If the doctor is work comp certified they should be able to do this. However if he didn't notify the doctor that he got hurt at work than again, his credibility looks bad. So it's legal for work comp not to pay the bills and pay your friend, if your… [cont.]

What are the American workers doing that is causing virtually every manufacturing job to leave the USA?
Q. Is it the workers, the consumers or the CEO's that is to blame? Read the lables everytime you buy ANYTHING. Some nuts and fruit comes from Vietnam, China, Indonesia. Eleven million gallons of toxic, cancer causing agent orange was sprayed over Vietnam. You feel safe eating stuff from there? Babies and dogs have died due to the toxins in Chinese baby formula and ingredients in dog food. Why do we keep buying stuff made someplace else while our own family members can not find jobs?

How do funeral home workers deal with the suffering and sadness they see day after day?
Q. I live near several funeral homes, and often see the workers outside, shoveling in their formal attire, or directing cars. My heart sinks whenever I drive by and there is a service. I have always tried to imagine what it must be like to be inside one of these people, but cannot. Does anyone have any insight?

A. I am a funeral director and for most directors I know find it very hard and often times we cry along with the families. I live in a small community and I know most of the families in our community. So every time we get a call my stomach drops to hear the name. However, I feel that my job is needed and I find it very rewarding to help our families get through the rough period in their lifes. We also have the unique ability to get to know nearly all of the community and be close to them. Hope this helps! God Bless!

Do social workers spend more time doing paper work than actually helping people?
Q. I am planning on going to grad school to obtain my MSW because I want to help people but I was told that social workers spend more time doing paperwork than actually helping people. Since I would be spending a large sum of money to attend graduate school, I would like to hear the opinion of social workers out there before making a decision.

A. I want to say yes. Paperwork is needed for legal reasons and to help other co-workers who will be working on your caseload while you are gone. I will give you an example of my job. 1. A screener gets a report of abuse and sends the report to me to investigate. 2. I investigate the allegation. 3. I write down what I found. 4. I conclude my investigation and find the allegation to be true. 5. I re-write the report in the format that the court will accept. 6. The court investigator does her own independent investigation. 7. The court investigator writes her own court document (report). ...and so on. So, as you can see writing is a big thing. And, without writing every single detail, things can go wrong. And, a child can die as a result of… [cont.]

How can I prevent my co-workers and neighbors from finding out I'm an involuntary virgin?
Q. I'm a 26 year old involuntary virgin for life. Recently, while working, I've encountered a lot of co-workers who want to talk about sex and how recently everyone has had it? Many people mention that they had had it within the last few days or weeks. I felt awkward, and remained quiet on the matter. How can I pretend to be a non-virgin without sounding too dishonest? I'm ugly and poor so actually getting a girlfriend is out of the question. Thanks.

When corporations hire workers, are they performing an act of charity or doing the worker a favor?
Q. I keep reading this assumption here on YA. If a corporation hires someone, it's because the corporation's owners or management believe that the person will return more value to the corporation than the cost of the person's wages. That's the ONLY reason any corporation would hire someone, isn't it? They don't do it out of pity, or charity, or kindness. So why do so many people believe that workers should be "grateful" when corporations hire them? It's a business decision--nothing but a contractual relationship resulting from the arm's length negotiation between employer and employee. What else could it be?
Asked by Sadcat - Thu Feb 4 17:55:37 2010 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In either case that is precisely what they would have you think. If I may add, that is what they would try and convince the government of so that they could be taxed as a charity or non-profit.
